How to Store Cannabis — Keep Flower Fresh, Edibles Stable

Cannabis loses terpenes (smell, flavor, effect) when exposed to air, light, and heat. Properly stored Michigan flower stays peak for 6-12 months; mishandled flower flatlines in 2 weeks. Here's the storage playbook for every category.

01

Flower storage

Airtight glass jar. Boveda or Integra humidity pack inside (58-62% RH). Stored at room temperature. Away from direct light. The original Michigan dispensary jar is sealed and often opaque — keep flower in that until you switch to a larger storage jar. Plastic bags kill terpenes within 2-4 weeks.

02

Pre-roll storage

Original tube, sealed. Once opened, smoke within 2 weeks. Pre-rolls are vulnerable to drying because the tube has minimal air seal. If you bought a 10-pack and plan to stretch it over a month, drop a humidity pack in the original packaging.

03

Vape cart storage

Cool, dark, vertical. Heat thins the oil; vertical storage prevents the wick from drying. Avoid leaving carts in a hot car. Used carts can last 4-6 weeks at peak quality after first puff. Distillate carts hold longer than live-resin carts because there's less to lose.

04

Edibles storage

Original packaging, sealed, room temperature. Chocolates can be refrigerated to extend shelf life. Gummies kept open will get tacky and lose dosing accuracy. Most Michigan edibles list a best-by date 6-12 months from manufacture.

05

Concentrate storage

Original silicone or glass container, cool, dark. Live rosin and live resin keep peak quality 6 months refrigerated, less at room temp. Distillate is shelf-stable for over a year.

Common questions

How long does cannabis flower stay fresh?

6-12 months in an airtight glass jar with a 58-62% humidity pack at room temperature. Plastic bags or direct light drop quality within 2-4 weeks.

Should I refrigerate cannabis?

Generally no. Refrigeration causes condensation that damages flower. Edible chocolates can be refrigerated. Live rosin and live resin can be refrigerated to extend shelf life. Flower belongs at room temperature.

How do I tell if cannabis flower has gone bad?

Flat or moldy smell, dusty appearance, crumbly texture, brown color. Slight dryness is recoverable with a humidity pack; visible mold means discard.
