Cannabis and Entertainment in Detroit and Port Huron

Detroit's music scene is one of the deepest in the country — Movement Festival, the jazz festival, MotorCity Sound Board, neighborhood clubs across the west side. Port Huron's lakefront draws summer crowds to McMorran Place and the marina district. Cannabis fits the lifestyle if you know which venues permit what, and which routes home keep you on the right side of Michigan law.

01

Casinos, stadiums, and arenas prohibit cannabis on property

MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino, Hollywood Casino at Greektown, Ford Field, Comerica Park, Little Caesars Arena, and the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy properties all prohibit cannabis on premises. Michigan Gaming Control Board rules apply to casinos; venue policy applies to stadiums and arenas. Carry possession only if you'll leave the venue before consuming, and never bring cannabis through security checkpoints.

02

Movement, Jazz Festival, and Hart Plaza events

Movement Electronic Music Festival, the Detroit Jazz Festival, and other Hart Plaza events take place on public civic space. Public-space cannabis consumption is prohibited under MCL 333.27954 regardless of the festival atmosphere. Event security and Detroit Police enforce. The realistic move is to consume in a private residence before the event and rely on possession-only at the venue.

03

Bars, clubs, and restaurants in Detroit

Michigan bars and restaurants are private property; cannabis policy is set by the operator. Most Michigan bars prohibit cannabis on premises by house policy to avoid liquor-license complications. A small but growing number of cannabis-licensed consumption events run on temporary permits (Michigan Cannabis Lounge License is in early rollout as of 2026 but few venues hold one). Default assumption: bars prohibit. Verify with the venue before arriving.

04

Port Huron and the Blue Water entertainment district

Port Huron's marina district, McMorran Place, the Bluewater Convention Center, and downtown lakefront venues all sit on the same public/private property logic. McMorran Place is publicly operated; cannabis use is prohibited. The Bluewater Convention Center and DoubleTree by Hilton Port Huron are private property; default-prohibits. Pine Grove Park and the Lake Huron shoreline are public — possession permitted, consumption prohibited.

05

Getting home safely

Operating any motor vehicle while under the influence of cannabis is illegal in Michigan and treated similarly to alcohol. Detroit and Port Huron both have ride-share coverage; downtown Detroit also has the QLine and DDOT bus service. Plan transit before consuming. Don't transport open cannabis containers in the vehicle's passenger compartment — keep them sealed and in the trunk.
